My son gets so excited about seeing watermelon on the menu in any form, but when he saw that we were cutting watermelon into fun shapes for this treat, I thought his eyes might pop out of his head with excitement. He had such a blast helping to make these, and his baby sister had a pretty good time eating them, too. 🙂

These are incredibly simple but a really delightful summertime treat and perfectly festive for all the patriotic holidays. Red, white, and blue all the way.

What You’ll Need

I have seen really cute variations of this idea with other fruits, or with just watermelon and blueberries. I’ve also seen more elevated versions that use feta or a similar cheese for the “white” element. While that sounds wonderful for an adult-focused celebration, I knew my kids were not going to go for that. And I have to say, the marshmallows are easy and taste great!

How To Make Watermelon Fruit Sparklers

Begin by slicing the watermelon into large circles, aiming to make each approximately 1″ in width. Lay them flat and use the star cookie cutter to cut stars from the red flesh.

Try to press the cookie cutter down flat in one smooth motion, so the star isn’t awkwardly angled or lopsided. I like to use the open palm of my hand to press it down.

Now it’s a simple matter of making a little assembly line. You can thread the blueberries, watermelon, and marshmallow onto the skewers in any order or pattern you like. Just be sure to use the pointed end to poke through the fruit, and leave enough room on the bottom for someone to hold the stick comfortably. Perhaps a small someone!

Storage Tips

These skewers should stay in the refrigerator until they’re ready to be enjoyed. I’ve kept them successfully for up to 12 hours.
