Ingredient Notes & Substitutions

Most of these ingredients are fairly obvious and/or pantry staples. Here is what you will need:

  • Pretzels. Any miniature pretzel shape will work, even rods.
  • Olive oil. This helps the seasoning blend emulsify and adhere during baking. Canola, vegetable, or another neutral-flavored cooking oil makes a good substitute.
  • Honey. Sweet, sticky, delicious.
  • Whole-grain or Dijon mustard. An essential part of the flavoring. We use whole grain and Dijon interchangeably for these pretzels and love both results.
  • Dried mustard powder and garlic powder. Each adds depth and oomph to the seasoning mix. I like to start with a relatively small amount. After making these one time, you’ll have a pretty good sense of whether you would like even more seasoning for kick.

How To Make Homemade Honey Mustard Pretzels

This is an overview with some step-by-step photos to help you understand the process. Find the full printable recipe with measurements below.

Prep the Baking Sheet: Lay pretzels out on a large, rimmed baking sheet. Line the sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat if at all possible to avoid a sticky clean-up situation.

Mix the Seasonings: Combine the olive oil, honey, both kinds of mustard, and garlic powder in a small liquid measuring cup. Whisk really vigorously; at first the oil will float on top, but you want to keep stirring until the mixture emulsifies into a thick, even liquid. Drizzle this somewhat evenly over the pretzels.

Stir and Bake: Gently stir the pretzels to coat evenly with the seasoning mixture. Place in the oven and bake for approximately 45 minutes at 250 degrees F, stirring once or twice midway through the baking time.

Cool, Break Apart, and Enjoy: Some of the pretzels may stick together at first, but once set aside to cool it should be easy to snap them apart. Transfer to a serving bowl and enjoy!
